George had been in France for 18 months and was looking forward to his first leave due at Christmas. George was on duty as a sniper and went to attend a wounded comrade when he himself was shot.

Private G Wardle, Bridgegate, killed in action in France
Son of George and Mary Wardle of 4 Thorngate Wynd.
Brother of Frances and brother in law to James Young. They served in the same battalion and are both commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
It was reported in the Teesdale Mercury on 29th March 1916 that George had been wounded in the foot.
