On 7 February 1920, aged 40 and a widower, Charles married Mary McConnell, aged 30, also of the High Force Hotel. Mary was the daughter of Robert John McConnell a gas stoker, deceased. 

Notes:

The marriage records for Forest and Frith at Durham County Records Office state that Charles Edward Smith was a soldier.
