Teesdale Mercury, September 22nd 1915
Private John Riddell, of the Grenadier Guards, has just been on a visit to bis parents from Caterham. The son of Mr Superintendent Riddel and Mrs Riddell, of Barnard Castle, and a fully certificated schoolmaster, the fine young fellow has made great sacrifice loyally and patriotically to serve his King and Country, and is, in fact, every inch a soldier.

Teesdale Mercury, October 4th 1916
The son of Mr Superintendent Riddell, of Barnard Castle , who is in the Foot Guards, has been wounded in action.
