Born in around 1870/71. At the age of one, Tobias was living at Vale House with his grandparents. Also present in the house was James Pratt, a farm labourer. By 1881, Tobias was living with James and Agnes Pratt, now married, on a farm in Spital (probably Three Chimeneys) and was listed as James' son. In 1911, by which time Agnes was a widow, he is recorded as Tobias Gibson, a Roadmaker working for the Rural District Council. He reverted to Pratt when he enlisted 6 years later. At the time of Tobias' death, Agnes was living at "Rockcliffe", 44 South Road, Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records Tobias' age at death as 45. However, on his attestation papers his age is given as 46 years and 9 months, which means at the time of his death, 3 months' later, he would be been 48.
