Roy enlisted in the public School's battalion in September 1914 and was gazetted into the 8th Yorks. in December that year. He was made signalling officer in May 2015.
He was awarded the Military Cross in September 1917 for persistence in laying telephone cables under heavy shellfire. The Mercury reported that "His efforts have been met with success owing to his gallantry and perseverance".
