We know from his diary that he spent time in Aldershot, saw action at Comiers in France, was in hospital in France then was invalided to the UK, where he was at the Royal Infirmary in Derby and Brighton Hospital. He also spent time convalescing in Darley Dale and Lewes. This was all interspersed by time at Maresfield Park in Uckfield.
