William died at Passchendale on August 15th 1917, his body was never found.
While returning from duty, William and two comrades were walking across a railway line. A German shell fell next to them and killed all three men.

He was described by his chaplain as a steady, good man, loved and respected by all who were his comrades in arms. 'Like the brave man he was, he died at the post of duty'.
