William died at Passchendale on August 15th 1917, his body was never found.

While returning from duty, William and two comrades were walking across a railway line. A German shell fell next to them and killed all three men.


Family Details:

Son of Mr Barnett of Watling Streer, Leintwardine.

Married to Isabella, one child born after his death.


William was a gamekeeper by occupation. He had been employed by Sir Powlett Milbank at his Yorkshire estate for ten years. 

At the time of his death, Leinthardine. William had been inn the army for fifteen months, eleven of which were spent on the  Western front with the machine gun corps.

He was described by his chaplain as a steady, good man, loved and respected by all who were his comrades in arms. 'Like the brave man he was, he died at the post of duty'.
