'Private Christopher Atkinson, son of Mr and Mrs W Atkinson, Lendings, formerly a compositor in The Teesdale Mercury office left Barnard Castle on Monday night, where he has been on a few days leave of absence preparatory to leaving on foreign service. He is attached to the (Second) 6th Battalion of Durham Light Infantry.'

Private Christopher Atkinson, of the Lendings, has joined the overseas’ forces of His Majesty, and in a postcard to a friend in Barnard Castle, just received, says that they are going into the firing line. Private T. Blackett, of this town, is with him, and both are in the 6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.
