Trained at Haltwhistle.

Was hospitalised with a poisoned right hand in the summer of 1916. He wrote that he had been in 'some of the hottest parts of the front' and had had a 'good experience of the firing line'. Aeroplane duels were frequent, an exciting form of combat with the allies succeeding in driving the enemy down in 9 out of 10 cases.

Used to be in the local choir and led the signing in his brigade.
