Married to Mary Elizabeth Lee, together they had five children - Margaret Eliza, Greta, George William, Laura and Hilda.
He was amongst the first men from Middleton-in-Teesdale to enlist, and left for France in April 1915. The Teesdale Mercury reports him visiting home on leave in September 1915.
George was seriously wounded whilst in the Somme in 1916 (Teesdale Mercury reports this as 1917). In March 1917 the Teesdale Mercury reports him visiting home after having been in hospital in Ireland suffering from wounds in his legs. They were the result of a shell bursting on his machine gun.
He returned to France in April 1918 serving with the Machine Gun Corps and was promoted to Lance Corporal. He died near Soissons at the Second Battle of Aisne.
