George died on Christmas morning following a short illness. He was a member of the 'Faithful Durhams'; four of his comrades in arms carried the casket at his funeral.

Family Details:

Son of George and Henrietta Stout of Bridge End, Startforth. George was the husband of Violet Stout, together they had three children and lived in Thorngate, Barnard Castle.

Notes:

Early in his married life George had been a 'hewer of coal' living in the Durham area.

He lost an arm whilst serving in France and spent a short furlough at home with his family in June 1917 after the incident. Despite his injury George continued to work as a postman in the Langleydale area after the war, something which earned him a great amount of respect within the community.

George had once been a member of the town football team and after his death a benefit match, sanctioned by the Durham Football Association, took place in his honour. The game was held on New Year's day 1919 and raised a sum of nearly £15 for his widow and three children.
