Youngest of the six sons of John McDowell Smith and Margaret (nee Stout) Smith to serve in the War and the third of the five who lost their lives. His is brothers Alfred, George Henry, Robert and John Willam (Stout) were also killed. Alf's death prompted Mrs Bircham to write to the Queen regarding the "Heavily Bereaved" family. Wilf was given an official discharge and returned in the autumn of 1918.
He was wounded in February 1917 and spent a short furlough at home.
