Benjamin was called up in August 1914 and wounded that November during the onslaught at Mons. After receiving serious head wounds he was returned home for treatment at the Sunderland Hospital, as a consequence he suffered from epileptic fits. After five years he again sought treatment, to no avail. He received a very dignified funeral on returning to Barnard Castle.
