In January, 1918 the Parish magazine recorded his death. “He fell in action on October 9th & was in the West Yorkshires. Many mourn his loss. He was the son of the Late Thomas & Mrs Pyburn, well-known & respected Staindrop people.”
Francis was the son of Thomas & Ruth Pyburn of Staindrop. In 1901 he was 16 & living with his parents on The Green. His father was a self-employed tailor & Francis worked as a labourer.
A Raby source states that Francis was a journeyman gardener, who came to Raby in July, 1907 & left on 22nd March, 1916. He joined the West Yorkshire Regiment in March 1917 & served in France & Flanders. Francis was killed in action on 9th October, 1917 aged 33 & is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
