At the time of his supposed death Fred was acting as a runner for the troops and was posted as missing after a very heavy German attack on their positions. When last seen he was unwounded and it was therefore suspected that he might have been taken prisoner. This turned out not to be the case.
Son of John Thomas Merryweather and late Sarah Ann Cash. Sarah was widowed and married Matthew Cash of Barnard Castle, she died 11December 1917 buried at St Mary's Barnard Castle.
His Brother Arthur emigrated to Kansas City in 1910 on S.S. Lusitania.
Fred was a hairdresser/ tobacconist at 15 market Place; he relinquished the business upon enlisting. A concert was held for Fred and another local soldier, John Wright before they left for the front.
In August 1917 The Mercury reported that Fred was enjoying a short respite from the Front at his parent's house after taking part in a 'good deal of severe fighting'.
He was reported missing on 12th April 1918.
