Fred was serving at the front with the quartermasters' staff behind the line when the group went to spend the night in a room with the charcoal fire still burning. Next morning when they did not appear at the usual time, access had to be gained by breaking down the door. Fred had suffocated and did not respond to artificial respiration.
Son of Thomas and Mary Henderson of 1 Bailol Street. In 1911, Fred had two older sisters, Florence and Evelyn, and three younger siblings, Kate, Thomas Albert and James William.
Born 1895. Upon leaving school in 1912 Fred had been employed at the Streatlam Estate Office. He enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry in June 1915 before proceeding to Hartlepool.
