After being shot in the chest Robert was taken to No. 62 Casualty Clearing Station where he died. In a letter to his widow, Sister E.M. Smith states that:
'He was in this ward for several days, and, although he was bright and cheerful, his wound was of such a serious nature that it was impossible for him to recover. Everything possible was done for him. Just before he passed away he spoke of you and his little one."
Son of William and Elizabeth Fawcett. Robert married Harriott of 22 Coronation Street.
Robert was educated at the Morritt Memorial Schools, Startforth. Prior to the war he served as an apprentice to John Johnson, a local butcher in Horsemarket. Robert took over the business on his retirement.
He was first drafted to the Northumberland Fusiliers, and afterwards transferred to the Sherwood Foresters.
