Son of William and Mary Eltherington of Back Lane, Cotherstone. Robert was married to Hannah Etherington, who is known to have lived at 8 Queen Street. They had five children together.
Prior to the war Robert had worked for around 15 years for the Co-op. The society played a special part in helping the family after the news of his death was received.
