Teesdale Mercury 5 Dec 1917 gives details as part of report on presentation of Private Croft's medals to his mother.

Letter from Mrs Croft to son Stanley says George was killed 'while sending a Telephone message'.

Family Details:

Brother of Thomas Francis Croft, Walter Croft and Stanley Septimus Croft, all of whom served and survived (see separate entries in the database).

1901 census returns list father Tom and mother Mary, with several brothers and a sister. The Croft family tree gives further details as follows.

Parents: Tom Croft (born in Heslington, North Yorkshire in 1861; died November 1901) and Mary Croft (nee Abbott, born in 1863 in Hunmanby, Yorkshire).

Brothers and sisters: Tom (born 1878); Alice (born 1881 in Huumanby); John Edward (born 1886 in Durham City); Ernest (born in 1889 in Startforth); Thomas Francis (born 1893 in Barnard Castle) ; Walter (born 7 March 1895 in Barnard castle); Mary E (born 1897 in Barnard Castle); Stanley Septimus (born 1 June 1899 in Barnard Castle); Nancy E (born 1901 in Barnard Castle). 

According to information received from relatives, the family lived in Hunmanby, Durham City, Startforth and latterly at 4 Pearson Terrace, Barnard Castle.  

Teesdale Mercury 5 Dec 1917 report of medals presentation describes him as 'son of the esteemed widowed Mrs Croft' and refers to 'two other sons in the army, while one had been discharged, invalided, after taking part in several engagements, and also two in Canada, and a daughter working on munitions'.
