Private W J Coates, died of double pneumonia on 1st November, at home

Family Details:

The eldest of 5 surviving children, others being Winifred, John Anthony, Reginald, & Norman Percival.

William worked for Walter Wilson's Grocery (as did his youngest brother Norman)

His family were strong Methodists, his father was choirmaster, & local preacher at Newgate Methodist Chrurch.

Notes:

Caught the Spanish Flue in the Trenches, insisted he came home as he was due his leave & died shortly after at 38 Newgate.

Letter from William describes his leave in Leeds, where he went absent to go out with a 'tart'.
